I spend a lot of time on recommender systems research, a lot of time… If you have ever shopped at Amazon, you have experienced a recommender system. It recommends to you books or other products based on what you have views in the past, that is a recommender system.
The goal of a recommender system is to predict what you might like to also buy. The whole idea is to get you, the consumer, to buy more stuff. And typically, that’s what people do, they do end up buying more stuff. The real fun is in the algorithm, that’s where the real magic is. Your algorithm is where you put your logic so that the recommender system can understand, what to recommend. This is where it gets rather complex and for a blog post, I don’t want to get into that. But keep in mind that there are various schools of thought on what goes into a recommender system’s algorithm and as a business owner or product manager, you need to understand this algorithm so that you can fully wrap your head around just what your recommender is really recommending.
