The Data Age - Big Data and Living in an Age of Data

The Wonderful World of Sensor Data

Normally when I talk to people about sensor data, they freak out that big brother is watching them. Although that is real potential and possibility, I don’t think we should ignore that sensor data can be used to help us in a lot of situations. And when you combine sensor data as part of a big data and machine learning system, you have the potential for a lot of great things.

Sensor data is data collected from a sensor. This can be anything really, a sensor to see how often people enter a store, or buy a product or even how often people drink from a water fountain. Sensor data is pretty much limited by own on imaginations. The nice thing about sensor data is how it can be used in our own lives.

For example, there are many companies that talk about tracking your child to make sure they are in school. With a sensor you could actually track the patterns of your child and then get an alert when your child is not following their normal pattern. Other than that, the algorithm is doing the watching and no one else.

Or you can even use it for yourself. We all have patterns and habits, a sensor embedded in your wallet can keep tabs on you and track you and send an alert when you are no longer doing what is the norm for you. This could come in handy for elderly people who live alone.
